Aftercare product guide

What to use after a hair transplant, and when

Short answer: product choice follows the stage of your recovery. In the first weeks the aim is to keep the scalp clean without rubbing or irritating it, so people use a cleansing foam or a very mild shampoo. From about the first month the routine widens to a regular shampoo and, if your clinic agrees, a leave-in scalp serum. From month three it becomes a steady long-term routine, which some people pair with a daily food supplement.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Your clinic decides when you can wash, how the first wash is done and when each product can be used. If your clinic's plan is different from this page, follow your clinic.

Before the first wash

Rest and follow your clinic

Most clinics do the first wash themselves or show you exactly how to do it, usually around days 3 to 5. We do not suggest adding any product of your own before then.

From the first wash to week 2

Gentle cleansing, no rubbing

The aim is to keep the scalp clean so the crusts soften and come away on their own. Apply the product the way your clinic showed you, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. People usually choose a cleansing foam or a mild, low-foam shampoo at this stage.

Weeks 2 to 4

Washing becomes part of your daily routine

By now the crusts are usually gone. Keep using a mild shampoo every day or as often as your clinic suggests, and check with your clinic before going back to hair dryers, styling products or a firm massage.

Months 1 to 3

Adding a leave-in scalp serum

If your clinic agrees, you can add a serum: applied to a dry scalp after washing and left on. Choose one and use it consistently rather than switching between several.

Dermaroller kits come later. Use them only once your clinic confirms that the scalp has fully healed.

Months 3 to 12

A steady long-term routine

This is the long stretch. Using the same shampoo and serum consistently matters more than adding new products. Some people also take a daily food supplement alongside their care routine.

Food supplements are not medicines and should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any medication, speak to your doctor first.

What to look for in a post-transplant shampoo

  • A mild cleansing base that does not sting or leave the scalp tight.
  • Little or no fragrance, especially in the first weeks.
  • A product that rinses off easily, so you do not need to rub.
  • A size that lasts the period you need, so you do not switch products halfway.
